Stortemelk II

Wim Vink:

It was during the end of the sixties. We were on board of a small supplier which was a stand by vessel near to an oil production platform north of Terschelling. We were with a crew of five. We were on deck and we were very bored. One of us had taken a compressed air gun. We were just shooting around until one of us aimed on the door of the galley. Till the  cook came outside in anger because the bullets went right through the wooden door. And so we were hanging again over the railing. The production platform had just been put on its right place. The platform was then being lowered. We saw the STORTEMELK. She was very near to the platform. After all these years I still don;t know how it all happened. A current which took the ship may be? Suddenly we saw the STORTEMELK sailing under the platform. And the platform was still lowering. It was not possible. The mast of the STORTEMELK broke and we saw men scarcely escaping from the wheel house. The wheelhouse was destroyed and a few moments later the funnel was swept of the ship.and at last the aft mast. But yet the STORTEMELK managed to escape, badly damaged. In later years I saw her again. She had a diffirent appearance but it just had not been a simple rebuilding. .

Wim Vink:
